Transitional Residences and Apartments
Five group residences, located in Brooklyn, Queens and Westchester, provide transitional housing and support to homeless, formerly incarcerated and abused women and their children. Our professional staff connects women to support services in the community, assists with basic life skills and helps with obtaining permanent housing. A core community of religious sisters and staff live in four of these residences and participate in everyday life with the women and families.
The transitional apartments, located in Brooklyn, are for homeless women and their children. The apartments have a capacity for 15 mothers and 42 children, and each family has their own separate living unit. Professional staff provides case management services and a childcare center adjacent to the apartments allows mothers to attend medical appointments, go on job interviews, and search for permanent housing.
Parole Independent Living Residence
Our sixth transitional residence houses women on parole who have graduated from our re-entry program. This residence provides recent parolees a temporary and affordable place to live, while they strive to find employment, attend job training or educational courses, and save enough money for a permanent apartment of their own.
Permanent Housing
Providence House operates permanent housing for four formerly homeless families in an apartment building in lower Westchester and in two, two-family homes in Brooklyn. Services are provided to assist families with caring for their own apartment and utilizing resources in their local community.
Two additional supportive, permanent housing programs are in development in Brooklyn that will provide 72 additional units of permanent housing for formerly homeless women with histories of incarceration and special mental health needs.
Referral Process for Our Residences and Services:
Homeless Referrals
Women who are homeless from the five boroughs of New York City must be referred directly from the Intake Unit (PATH office) of the New York City Department of Homeless Services, which is located in the Bronx. Three of the group residences and the transitional apartment program accept these referrals. Women from Westchester County are referred to our Westchester residence by the Westchester Department of Social Services, located in White Plains.
Parole Referrals
Women who are being released from prison must go through an application process for our programs. Women from all New York State prisons are eligible to apply. Applications can be obtained from a parole officer or from Providence House’s Parole Program Director.
