Come and Join A Place With A Heart!
Volunteers help support our mission by participating in our various programs. Our volunteer program is flexible, offering long- and short-term volunteer opportunities.
Short-term volunteer opportunities usually last one week to two months. You must be 18 years or older and at least one year out of high school. Room and board (if needed) is available. Summer volunteers begin after May 31st.
In addition to some of the projects listed below, volunteer proposals are considered throughout the year depending on need. Projects in the past have ranged from construction, decorating, and landscaping to a back-to-school supply drive for our students.

Long-term volunteers participate in daily life, activities, and the unique ways that each PH community defines itself (shared prayer, shopping/household responsibilities, etc.). Ideal candidates are women in their 20’s, 30’s, and older, who are college graduates or attending graduate school. We also welcome professional women working in the local area. Long-term volunteer experience usually lasts one year.
All Providence House volunteers must be:
- 18 years of age or older (21 or older for live-in)
- Female, if living at Providence House
- Able to live and work with a diverse group of people in an urban area
- Willing to support the mission and values of Providence House
Volunteer Stories
“I have learned more in the last four months at Providence House than in the sum total of all my volunteer experiences. The challenges that are presented on a daily basis are enormous and I have watched in awe as the residents, staff, core community members and directors work together to meet them all. I learn something new everyday from these brilliant women and I am very grateful to be a part of such an inspiring community. Thank you, Providence House!” –Vanessa, Brooklyn, NY
“Providence House provide[s] structure and community to the women who reside there, including me. The relationships that I have developed with many of the women who pass through have been very rewarding. Conversing and interacting with the women and their children, as well as the parole women has been an experience that I would not have received anywhere else. I pray that when they leave Providence House they will know that people who care about them do exist.” –Jean, New Rochelle, NY
“During a one day service project, … a student group at St. John’s and I cleaned and worked at Providence House II. We spent a wonderful day getting to know the staff, the mission of Providence House and each other as we scrubbed and organized. Of course throughout the day, children would peek in to see what we were up to. They were a wonderful distraction!” –Kate, New York, NY
