Our Programs

Family Transitional Shelter

Our Transitional Shelter Program provides families with a safe place to stay while they take important steps toward long-term stability. Over the course of six to eight months, our team works alongside each family to help them navigate challenges, connect with healthcare and childcare resources, build financial stability, and secure permanent housing. Through personalized support and compassionate guidance, families are empowered to create a stronger foundation for the future.

Women’s Justice Program

Our Women’s Justice Program serves women who would otherwise remain at Rikers Island while awaiting trial, as well as those returning to the community after incarceration. In a safe, supportive environment, our trauma-informed staff is available 24 hours a day to help residents access mental health and substance use treatment, develop practical life skills such as budgeting and financial literacy, and meet any parole, probation, or court-related requirements. Through individualized support and compassionate care, women are empowered to rebuild their lives and move forward with confidence.

Permanent Supportive Housing

Our Permanent Supportive Housing Program provides stable, affordable housing for families and individuals who have experienced chronic homelessness and may be living with mental health or substance use challenges. Through personalized case management and clinical support, we work alongside residents to build essential life skills, strengthen their independence, and achieve their personal goals. By combining long-term housing with compassionate, ongoing support, we help individuals and families create lasting stability and thrive in their communities.

“Embrace the Journey”: Lydia’s Story of Hope and Healing

I reached out to Lydia shortly after she transitioned from Providence House into permanent housing. But before talking about this new beginning, I wanted to understand how her journey with Providence House first began.

Lydia shared that she had experienced homelessness for nearly three years and had also spent ten months at Rikers Island. During that time, her caseworker informed her that a placement had been secured for her at Providence House. Lydia remembers understanding, almost immediately, that this was her opportunity to rebuild her life.

Providence House is thrilled to announce a bold new chapter for the Women’s Justice Program. After a 4-year strategic planning process, we are bringing to life the first-ever purpose-built site specifically designed for women exiting the incarceration system.

This transformational project tackles the urgent link between homelessness and incarceration, creating a place where women returning from Rikers Island and beyond can heal, rebuild, and thrive with dignity and hope.
