Our Secret to Success? We Never Give Up.
Building relationships with our residents is crucial when it comes to providing effective supportive services, but there’s no blanket approach when it comes to establishing trust with an individual in our programs. Our clients often come to us after long periods of instability and chaos, and our program staff knows gaining trust is a process and can take time. Here’s a great example of how Case Manager Juliana’s persistency paid off and made all the difference in the life of former resident Michael.
For years, Michael was resistant to seeking help for his mental health and substance use. Despite having an extensive network, Michael was estranged from most of his friends and family because he did not want to face them while battling addiction. He was shut off from the world. No matter how hard we tried to connect with him, he simply refused to engage. But our team never gave up.
Last year, Michael was assigned a new Case Manager named Juliana. She was committed to connecting with him, making him homemade birthday cards, and conducting daily check-ins. These efforts were largely to no avail, but one day Michael had a health scare that landed him in the hospital. Juliana rushed to see him, and this act of genuine kindness and compassion was the turning point in his road to recovery. Michael was so moved by this gesture that he finally opened up to Juliana about his struggles. After years of refusing help, he was now willing to create a service plan and work on his challenges.
Today, Michael is reconnected with his family. He is now utilizing his support system and living independently in a new community. Though he is no longer one of our residents, our commitment to aftercare means that he can always turn to us when he needs help. Since moving out of Providence House, he has called Juliana nearly every day to tell her about his progress and seek guidance on his journey to health and wellbeing.
