Welcome Back WJP Program Director Nyasha Salmon!

Join us in welcoming back Nyasha Salmon, Director for the Providence House Women's Justice Program. Nyasha is returning from maternity leave just in time to oversee the expansion of this program. To commemorate this occasion, Nyasha shared a few words at our Ground Breaking Ceremony about the importance of this program and its impact in helping women with criminal justice histories. See below for a transcript of her powerful speech.

Transcript:

When I think about the Women’s Justice Program, the first thing that comes to mind is home.

It is a place of safety, warmth, and welcoming.

A place where women can find shelter and support as they navigate the challenges of re-entry.

Most importantly: it is a place that is accepting and caring, and allows people to learn from their mistakes so they can finally let their guard down to embrace help.

It is such a rewarding experience to be a part of this program for the past year.

I have watched as residents come through our doors feeling broken and lost, and a few months later, I get to see them bloom, grow, and find purpose.

One such person is a resident that we will call JP. When JP entered the Women’s Justice Program in February of 2022, she was in need of support for her mental health.

Due to a schizoaffective disorder, she lived in a constant state of fear and anxiety. The stress impaired her ability to work, take care of herself, and progress in the world. JP was also very distrustful of people and the world around her, making it impossible for her to maintain relationships with friends or family who she could turn to for support.

“But, despite all of these challenges, we never gave up on her and we never let her give up on herself.”

I am proud to say that JP is not only stable, but serves as a shining example of what success can look like. She is taking her medication as required, enrolled in a GED program, active in therapy, and on track to move into PH supportive housing in June 2023!

JP is proof that the Women’s Justice Program works. Our trauma-informed approach, consistency, and dedication to serving our clients is what sets us apart from other programs.

We are committed to every client that enters our program, regardless of their mistakes or shortcomings. We understand that justice-involved women face countless barriers when trying to find safe and stable housing, employment, and other basic needs.

We are proud to be breaking ground on this new housing program that will support women impacted by incarceration. We know that this program will provide a safe and supportive environment for these women to rebuild their lives and thrive.

Thank you for your support and commitment to this important cause.

Let’s continue to work together to create a world where justice-involved women can find the support and opportunities they need to succeed.
