Our Secret to Success? We Never Give Up.
Building relationships with our residents is crucial when it comes to providing effective supportive services, but there’s no blanket approach when it comes to establishing trust with an individual in our programs. Our clients often come to us after long periods of instability and chaos, and our program staff knows gaining trust is a process and can take time. Here’s a great example of how Case Manager Juliana’s persistency paid off and made all the difference in the life of former resident Michael.
43 Years of Creating Community & Transforming Lives at Providence House!
This August, Providence House turns 43 years old! As we reflect on over 4 decades of service in the community, we do so with much hope for the future. Our programs have evolved in response to the needs of the community while remaining true their values which have made Providence House so effective for so many individuals.
2022 People of Hope
For the first time in nearly 3 years, Providence House hosted its annual People of Hope dinner. This was truly a momentous occasion as we celebrated the resiliency of our organization. This was also our first opportunity to honor the lives of Janet D’Addario and Sister Elaine Roulet. These remarkable women shaped the foundation of Providence House though their many years of services.
In the three challenging years since our last People of Hope dinner, we have grown stronger as an agency and as an agent for change in our community. With support from donors, Providence House has increased its capacity to house at-risk individuals and families, while developing targeted programs that address the specific needs of those we serve. With enduring homelessness and ongoing troubles at Rikers Island, solutions and positive alternatives are needed now more than ever. Thanks our partners, we know that Providence House has a strong and bright future as we look ahead to new opportunities for opening even more transitional and permanent housing and developing even more robust programs for the women and families that we serve.
July Mission Moment: Hospitality & Authenticity
Last week, I sat down with Xiomara Reyes to learn more about what makes the Providence House Women’s Justice Program so impactful. From our residence in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, Ms. Reyes engages women in one-on-one and group counseling to help them overcome trauma and build their capacity for living independently in the community. According to Xiomara, “We make hospitality a pillar of our program and that is what sets us apart. We make people feel at home here in a very authentic way, and the residents really respond to that. For many of the women I see, this is the first time in their life that some takes a genuine interest in their wellbeing. We are invested in their success, and when they succeed, I genuinely feel joy.”
